Editorial Policy
How we select, verify, write, and correct our journalism.
Our purpose
UnHerd exists to provide informed, independent journalism for a European audience. We cover politics, culture, society, science and ideas. Our goal is accuracy, clarity and editorial independence — not traffic maximisation, ideological alignment or commercial convenience.
Story selection
We cover stories that are significant, substantive and of genuine interest to engaged European readers. We do not publish content purely because it is trending, because an advertiser has requested it, or because it flatters a particular political position. Our editorial team selects stories on their merits.
Opinion and analysis pieces are selected for the quality and originality of the argument, not for whether we agree with the conclusion. We publish a range of perspectives.
Accuracy and fact-checking
All factual claims in our reporting are based on publicly available information, official statements, primary documents, or named and attributed third-party reporting. We do not publish unverified rumours or single-source allegations without corroboration. Where we cannot verify a claim, we say so or do not include it.
Statistics, data and scientific claims are sourced to the originating study, institution or publication. We do not misrepresent methodology or selectively cite findings.
Opinion versus reporting
News articles report facts. Opinion and analysis pieces are labelled as such — with section labels such as Analysis, Opinion, or Ideas — and reflect the views of the named author, not the editorial position of UnHerd as a publication. We do not mix opinion and reporting within a single article without clear demarcation.
Attribution and sourcing
We name our sources wherever possible. Anonymous sources are used only when a source faces genuine risk if identified, and only when the information is significant and cannot be obtained any other way. We do not grant anonymity as a default. Where content draws on third-party journalism, the originating publication is credited.
Use of AI tools
Our editorial team uses AI tools to assist with research, background reading, drafting and editing. All content published on UnHerd is reviewed, edited and approved by a human editor before publication. AI assistance does not diminish our editorial standards: accuracy, fairness and accountability remain the responsibility of our team.
Sponsored content and advertising
We accept advertising. Advertising is clearly separated from editorial content and does not influence story selection, editorial tone or factual reporting. We do not accept payment to write positive coverage of any person, company or product. Sponsored content, if published, is labelled Sponsored and distinguished visually from editorial content. Advertisers have no input into non-sponsored editorial decisions.
Conflicts of interest
Our writers and editors disclose any material relationships — financial, personal or professional — that could create a conflict of interest with a story they are covering or a position they are expressing. We do not allow undisclosed conflicts to influence editorial content.
Corrections
We correct errors promptly and transparently. When we correct a factual error, we add a visible correction note to the article stating what was changed and when. We do not silently edit errors after publication. Our full corrections process is described on our Corrections page.
Editorial independence
Unherd Publishing does not direct editorial decisions. Editorial judgements about what to cover, how to cover it, and what to publish are made by the editorial team alone. Commercial relationships do not influence news coverage.
